Cross country keeping pace early in season

Winslow High School cross country coach Sal Hernandez reported that the Winslow teams have been active recently and that the boys’ team is progressing well. He hopes for improvement in the girls’ team. He said that there is plenty of time for improvement on both squads.

The WHS teams ran in the Peaks Invitational Meet at Flagstaff on Sept. 4. The boys’ team placed eighth while the girls were finishing No.13. Janeen Yazzie has been outstanding for the girls and finished seventh in this meet. The boys’ team enjoyed better balance with Joe Ricks being the lead runner and finishing No. 25.

On Sept. 10, the Winslow teams competed in the Window Rock Invitational. The boys’ team finished fourth with 119 points. Chinle won the event with a low score of 65. Rio Rico was second with a score of 113 and Hopi was third at 116. The Winslow boys had three medallists with Joseph Ricks finishing ninth, Derek Thompson, No. 11 and Kyle Whitehair, No. 15.

The Winslow girls finished ninth with 220 points. Ganado won the meet with a low score of 60. Janeen Yazzie was Winslow’s only medallist with a fine third place finish.

Both teams will compete in the Four Corners Invitational at Flagstaff on Saturday and in the Blue Ridge Invitational at Lakeside on Sept. 25.

Winslow will host the Winslow Invitational Cross Country Meet on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
