WHS volleyball well under way

The Winslow High School volleyball team has completed nearly half of its season. There have been quite a few rule changes since the 2003 high school season and some major changes in the way matches are set up and scored.

The most drastic change allows a point to be scored on every service, not just by the team serving. In the past, only the serving team could score and a “defensive” win only got that team the ball to serve and attempt to score.

This newer system is called “rally scoring.”

Matches now consist of five matches rather than three and are to a score of 25, not 15, though the last game of a set that goes five games is played to a score of 15. There is no more “net ball” and “double hits” are legal on a service.

Winslow lost its opening match to Holbrook three games to two, lost three games to one to Round Valley and three games to none to Snowflake. Game scores were not available for these matches.

In the Coconino Tournament on Sept. 13, Winslow split with Mingus 25-22 and 22-25, split with Coconino 13-25 and 26-24, defeated Sabino in one game 25-20, lost to Tuba City 17-25 and 12-25, lost to Coconino 22-25 and 24-26 and lost to Camp Verde in one game 24-26.

On Sept. 16, Winslow lost to Blue Ridge three games to two by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 22-25 and 13-15.

On Sept. 17, Winslow lost to Window Rock three games to two by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 22-25 and 13-15. This was the team’s first 3A North Region contest.

At the Round Valley Invitational Tournament on Sept. 19 and 20, Winslow split with Blue Ridge 25-15 and 24-25, split with Show Low 25-22 and 16-25, defeated Mogollon 25-22 and 25-23, defeated Hopi 25-13 and 25-10, lost to Sahuarita 18-25, lost to Seton Catholic 16-25 and 15-25 and lost to Chino Valley 24-25, 25-20 and 11-4 with the last game being called on a time limit.

On Sept. 23, Winslow defeated Hopi three games to none by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-12. This was the team’s second 3A North Region match.

Winslow was slated to play Tuba City on Thursday at Tuba City, Greyhills on Saturday at Winslow and Ganado at Ganado on Tuesday. The team will play Pinon at Pinon on Saturday and host Window Rock on Tuesday, Oct. 7. All of these are 3A North Region contests.
