Bulldogs end season 19-9-1 in second round of playoffs

The Winslow Bulldogs came from behind twice to defeat the Camp Verde Cowboys 10-9 in the opening round of the Arizona 3A Conference State Baseball Tournament.

Steven Martinez got the win in relief of Fernando Lopez who was hurt by a porous defense.

The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk, a failed fielder’s choice and error and a wild pitch.

Winslow tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame on doubles by Lucas Armenta and Lopez.

The Cowboys scored six times in the top of the third inning on an error, a single by David McDonald, another error, a triple by Brandon Harwood, yet another error, a single by Garett Cupp, a squeeze bunt, a walk and another squeeze bunt. When the dust settled, Camp Verde led 7-1.

Winslow staged a six-run inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 7-7. An error, three straight walks, singles by Martinez and Lopez and another error did the damage.

The Cowboys took a 9-7 lead in the top of the sixth on a singles by Matt Strickland, a walk, a single by Dylan Morgan, another error and a walk.

The Bulldogs won the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk, a hit batsman, an error and a single by Steven Martinez got Winslow even. A pair of walks loaded the bases and Nathan Garner singled off the pitcher’s foot to drive in the game-winning run.

Lopez was two for four with two RBIs. Martinez was two for five with three RBIs. Alex Richards, Lyle Brown and Andrew Richards were each one for three. Armenta was one for four and scored three times.

Globe 13 Winslow 0

The Globe Tigers defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 13-0 in the quarterfinals of the Arizona State 3A Conference Baseball Tournament played at Phoenix on Saturday.

Globe sophomore lefthander Nick Kieren blanked the Bulldogs on just five scattered hits in the contest which was called during the sixth inning under the “mercy” rule. Andrew Richards took the loss with both Michael Soehner and Lambert Dixson working in relief for Winslow.

The Tigers scored twice in the second inning on three walks, a hit batsman and a single by Jacob Boykin.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the third inning on a walk, singles by Michael Radanovich and Kevin Horta and a double by Sy Tomerlin.

The Tigers increased the lead to 9-0 in the top of the fifth. Radanovich tripled, Lonnie Bernal singled and there were two Winslow errors.

Globe scored five times in the top of the sixth to assure the game would be halted when Winslow failed to score in the bottom of the frame. Two walks an error and singles by Vernon Davis, Dustin Dallas and Horta figured in the scoring.

Lyle Brown was one for two for Winslow with a double. Lucas Armenta, Steven Martinez, Fernando Lopez and Nathan Garner were all one for three.
