Bulldogs to meet Cougars

The Winslow Bulldogs will meet the top-rated 3A team in Arizona in the semi-finals of the Arizona State 3A Football Championship Play-offs at 8 p.m. on Friday at Mesa Community College. The winner will meet the winner of a 5 p.m. game between the Snowflake Lobos and the Seton Catholic Sentinels.

Winslow earned its berth in the semi-finals with a 13-6 victory over Blue Ridge in the quarter-finals and a 56-0 first round win over Parker.

Show Low defeated Santa Cruz 21-0 in the quarter-finals after defeating Sahuarita 44-18 in the first round.

Snowflake got revenge for a regular season loss by defeating the Coolidge Bears 35-20. Seton Catholic nipped Queen Creek 17-7.

Winslow lost its season opener to Snowflake 20-7, but has run off 10 straight wins since. That string includes victories over Holbrook 39-8, Tuba City 41-8, Pinon 51-0, Ganado 37-6, Monument Valley 48-0, Hopi 49-14, Greyhills 51-0, Window Rock 52-0 and Parker 56-0 in the first round of the play-offs.

Show Low remained the only unbeaten 3A team in the state with its win over Santa Cruz. The Cougars had previously defeated Greyhills 56-6, Sahuarita 54-0, Snowflake 31-7, Alchesay 54-0, Blue Ridge 21-13, Holbrook 60-6, Round Valley 51-0 and Sahuarita 44-18 in the first round of the play-offs.

Both teams are noted for speed and a strong defense. Like Winslow and Blue Ridge, these teams have a history of putting a lot of points on the board, but are even more noted for keeping the other team out of their end zone.
