Lady Bulldogs 8 <br>Camp Verde 2

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs opened their 2003 season with an 8-2 victory over Camp Verde in a non-conference softball game played in Winslow on March 4.

Daphne Barton went the distance for the victory, scattering three hits and striking out eight Camp Verde batters. Penny Barnes was almost as good for Camp Verde, allowing only four hits and fanning eight. Barnes walked six batters, though, and four of those scored. She was also the victim of five costly miscues.

Erica Armenta was the offensive star of the game with two hits in three trips, three runs scored, two runs batted in and three stolen bases. Joanna Panana had a key bunt single in three trips to the plate. Nicole Curnutte was one for two with run scored and a stolen base.

Camp Verde scored in the top of the third on a single by Natasha Williams, a sacrifice and a Winslow error.

Winslow tied the game in the bottom of the third on singles by Curnutte, Armenta and Panana and two Camp Verde errors.

The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of wildness and a Camp Verde error in the fifth to plate five runs on only on hit, a single by Armenta that knocked in the first two runs and put Winslow ahead for good. Three of the five walks issued by Barnes came in this inning.

Camp Verde got one run back in the top of the sixth on singles by Brenda Miller and Angel Allen.

Winslow scored its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an error, a walk, two wild pitches and four stolen bases.
