WPD investigates Whistle Stop owner for fraud/theft

The Whistle Stop has been closed since before Christmas and remains closed.

Further investigation lead to other jurisdictions and revealed similar acts involving significant monetary figures. With this knowledge, a search warrant was served on the home of Mrs. Garrett. Several items of interest were seized pursuant to this search warrant.

Some of the items seized will be sent to the Northern Arizona Regional Crime Lab for forensic analysis. The Winslow Police Department Criminal Investigation Division will process other remaining evidence locally. This investigation is by no means complete. Additional information is received almost daily. This investigation continues.

Although Arizona State law relegates issuing a bad check a misdemeanor, other factors are considered in making a final determination as to the classification of offense this becomes. The number of checks written and the total cost involved are factors. Considering the circumstances, the misdemeanor may be upgraded to the crime of fraudulent schemes and theft, both felonies.

Any person who was affected in any way in regards to this case or has information that may be useful to this investigation is urged to call Detective Quentin Hayes at 289-3516 or Crime Stop at 289-2100. All assistance is greatly appreciated.

As with every investigation, all persons involved are presumed innocent until a jury renders a finding of guilt.
