The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2002-2003 campaign with a 52-46 loss to the Payson Longhorns at Payson on Nov. 26.
Payson led 16-14 after the first period, but the Bulldogs had taken a 27-26 lead by the intermission and still led 39-36 at the end of the third quarter. Payson outscored the Bulldogs 16-7 in the final period to take the victory.
Nine of the Longhorn’s fourth period points came at the charity stripe. Winslow did not shoot a free throw in the final period and only shot one in the second half. Payson enjoyed at huge margin at the stripe, making 20 of 33 attempts. Winslow was nine for 13.
Ronald Hoover led all scorers with 25 points for Winslow. Reed Hancock was also in double figures with 13 points. John Pate had seven points for the Bulldogs.
Nick Casuto paced Payson with 14 points. Jake Swartwood was also in double figures with 13 points.
Winslow was to host Snowflake on Tuesday and will participate in the Pepsi Invitational Tournament at Flagstaff on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will open 3A North Region play at Greyhills Academy on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
