Ladies second in Snowflake Tournie

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs finished second in the Snowflake Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday, winning four games and losing one. The results left the team with a record of 17-4 for the season.

Winslow opened play on Friday with a 7-2 win over St. Johns. Daphne Barton went the distance for the win, surrendering three hits while striking out nine and walking only one batter.

Winslow took a 4-0 lead in the third inning when they bunched four of there 12 hits and drew three walks. Sarah Ragnoli, Nicole Curnutte, Erica Armenta and Joanna Panana all singled in the rally.

St. Johns cut the margin to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of singles and a Winslow error.

The Lady Bulldogs added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on singles by Tessa Ramsey, Armenta, Barton and JoDawn White and a costly St. Johns error.

Ragnoli, Barton and White were each two for three. Armenta was two for four. Curnutte and Ramsey were each one for two and Panana was one for four.

Winslow defeated Alchesay 12-2 in their second contest on Friday. Juliet Sullenberger went the distance for the win, allowing four hits, walking one and hitting a batter while striking out five.

Alchesay took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double a walk and a wild pitch.

The Lady Bulldogs went on top for good 3-1 in the bottom of the first on singles by Armenta and White and a costly Alchesay error.

The Winslow margin grew to 8-1 in the bottom of the second on singles by Sullenberger, Armenta, Amanda Wilcox and Ragnoli, a hit batsman and a walk.

Alchesay scored an unearned run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 8-2. The Lady Falcons did scratch out three hits, two of the infield variety, but an error also figured in the scoring.

Winslow plated one run in the bottom of the third on a triple by Curnutte, a single by Armenta and an error to lead 9-2.

The margin grew to 10-2 in the fourth on an error and singles by Anna Pacheco and Alley Dongoske.

The Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the fifth that caused the game to be shortened under the “mercy” rule. Curnutte singled and there was an Alchesay error and a sacrifice fly that accounted for the last run.

Pacheco was two for two Armenta was three for four. Curnutte was two for three. White and Ragnoli were one for two. Wilcox and Sullenberger were one for three.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Snowflake junior varsity 13-2 in their final outing on Friday. Barton went the distance for the win, allowing three hits while fanning eight and hitting one batter.

Armenta led off the first with a double and scored on a ground out to give Winslow a 1-0 lead.

Snowflake tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a single and a triple.

Winslow scored five times in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Three of the runs were unearned as Snowflake committed a pair of costly errors. Panana and Barton doubled and Julie Estudillo had a key double. There were also two walks in the frame.

The Lady Bulldogs put the game away in the top of the fifth, scoring seven times to take a 13-2 lead. Ragnoli tripled, there was a walk, Curnutte tripled, Ramsey singled, there was another walk, Panana tripled and Barton homered to put an exclamation point on the rally. There was a hit batsman that did not figure in the scoring.

Armenta was two for two. Barton was two for four. Estudillo was one for two. Curnutte and Ramsey were one for three.

On Saturday, Winslow played Round Valley in the semi-finals and defeated the Elks 5-1. Barton ran her record to 12-2 with the complete game victory. She gave up four hits while fanning six.

Winslow took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a double by Armenta, singles by Barton and Ragnoli, a Round Valley error and an unwise fielder’s choice.

Round Valley cut the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the first on two Winslow errors.

Singles by Armenta, Panana and Barton produced a run in the top of the fourth to give the Lady Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.

A single by Armenta and a Round Valley error completed the scoring in the top of the sixth.

Armenta was four for four. Barton and Briana Conatser were each two for four. Panana was one for one with two sacrifices and a walk. Ragnoli was one for four.

Snowflake defeated Winslow 5-2 in the final game of the tournament to take the championship. Barton again went the distance, giving up seven hits, walking three and fanning five.

Snowflake took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a triple and an error.

The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on singles by Armenta, Panana and Barton.

Snowflake took the lead for good with a four run rally in the top of the fourth. The Lady Lobos bunched three of their hits with a walk, a poor fielder’s choice, an error and a walk to take a 5-1 lead.

Winslow scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a walk and two Snowflake errors.

Armenta was two for four. Ramsey was one for two. Panana and Barton were each one for three.
