Winslow 59 Window Rock 8<br><br>Opening game a wet one, but the sun shone on the Bulldogs<br>

The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2002 season with a 59-8 victory over the Window Rock Scouts in an Enchantment Region football game played in Winslow on Friday.

The Bulldogs scored on their first four possessions while holding Window Rock without a real threat until the closing minutes of the game.

Steven Martinez scored three touchdowns and passed for two more to pace the Bulldogs.

Nolan Horn ran for three scores and John Sullivan accounted for eight points on defense by causing a safety and scoring on a fumbled lateral.

The Bulldog defense led by Sullivan, Brian and Brandon Mitchell, Brandon Guzman and Spencer Prosser kept the Scouts in their end of the field and in trouble all night.

Martinez opened the scoring with a 44-yard run with 7:23 left in the first period. Orlando Vargas converted for a 7-0 Winslow lead.

Martinez scored again three minutes later on a 55-yard scamper. Jeremy Johnson passed to Carlos Quezada for the two-point conversion and a 15-0 lead.

Horn ran 11 yards with just 22 seconds left in the first period. Martinez passed to Shimeon Mattox for the two-point conversion and a 23-0 lead.

Sullivan and Warren Prosser tackled the Window Rock ball carrier in the end zone with 2:07 left in the second quarter to give Winslow a 25-0 lead.

After the kick-off, Horn ran for eight yards and a score with just 39 seconds remaining in the half. The conversion pass failed and Winslow led 31-0 at the intermission.

Martinez opened the second hal f scoring with a 27-yard run at the 9:53 mark. Warren Prosser ran for the two-point conversion and a 39-0 lead.

Martinez passed 18 yards to Quezada with 6:58 to go in the period and Horn’s conversion run gave the Bulldogs a 47-0 lead.

Horn completed the third period scoring with an 18 yard run. The conversion failed and Winslow led 53-0.

Sullivan picked up a loose lateral pass and scooted five yards into the end zone for a the final Winslow score with 2:27 left in the game. Martinez took a knee on the conversion and the Bulldogs led 59-0.

Window Rock struck with 2:05 showing on the clock on an 87-yard pass from Christopher Yazzie to Jeffery Johnson. The pair also connected for the two-point conversion that made the final score 59-8.

The Bulldog freshman and junior varsity teams also enjoyed success on Thursday. The freshmen defeated Round Valley 42-0 at Eagar and the junior varsity bested Window Rock 16-6 at Window Rock.
