Chinle Girls Beat Hopi

Polacca, Ariz - Chinle erupted for an eight run fifth inning to come from behind and beat Hopi, 13-10, March 5 in a thrilling girls softball game that went down to the last out. Chinle remained undefeated in three games while Hopi lost its season opener. Chinle Coach Andrea Yazzie said the Lady Wildcats started slowly, but made a strong comeback. She emphasized that it was important for Chinle to win this game against a 3A team as they prepare for the 4A North competition starting with Sinagua High School in Flagstaff March 21.

Coach Yazzie said the victory was due in part to Connie Jones pitching. Jones came on in relief in the middle of the third inning and kept Hopi on the ropes until the seventh inning when she escaped a rally. “Connie did a tremendous job,” Coach Yazzie said. The Chinle coach complimented her team on its fielding, but noted that it was shaky at times. “We need to be quicker to respond,” she said. Coach Yazzie had nothing negative to say about the Chinle hitting which seemed solid throughout. The Chinle coach also praised Hopi.
