Rural Flagstaff Area School Expands Permaculture Program

Star School is the new kid in town where charter schools are concerned. In its first year, the school is housed in an attractive, wind and solar-powered structure, Star School is nested on a hilltop beneath Merriam Crater on Leupp Road, and offers a unique, community-based educational opportunity. Star School is one of three sister schools based on the principles of respected medicine man (Little Singer) of Birdsprings—but distinguished in that Star School is not situated on the Navajo reservation.

Nonetheless the highest percentage of students at Star School are Navajo and live in the Leupp and Grand Falls areas. Some were students at Little Singer—their parents approved of the curriculum and theory of Little Singer, but their children faced long bus rides. Several parents have expressed their delight at the much closer option. This is in keeping of the observation of Hatahlii Yazhi Bi’Olta that children are the heart of a community, and must be kept close to home—while receiving the best education possible, combining both traditional and western knowledge.
