The Tuba City Warriors opened their 2001 football season by defeating their in-city rival Geryhills Academy Knights 30-0 in Tuba City on August 31.
Tuba City’s Andrew Johnson rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was nearly equaled by teammate Elijah Allen who rushed for 186 yards and also scored a pair of touchdowns.
Greyhills kept the game close through the first half. Johnson ran 23 yards for a first quarter score and when the conversion attempt failed, the Warriors led 6-0. That was still the score at the intermission.
Tuba City scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 18-0 going into the final period. Two more touchdowns in the closing 12 minutes put the 30-0 final score on the boards.
Tuba City will be at Page for a non-regional game on Friday the 14th. Greyhills was at Winslow on September 7 and will host Alchesay in a non-regional game on Friday the 14th.
