Pondering the Pigskin

The Arizona Cardinals claimed first place in the NFL East on Sunday without playing a down. All the other teams in the region lost their opening games. The Cardinals will take on the Washington Redskins in the nation’s capitol on Sunday. The Redskins were skinned 30-3 by the San Diego Chargers in their opener.

The Arizona Wildcats moved to 2-0 for the season with a 36-29 win over the Idaho Bengals on Saturday. Idaho scored all of its 29 points in the final period. The Wildcats will be off this week and host UNLV on Sept. 22.

The Arizona State Sun Devils playing their first game under Kirk Koetter cruised past the San Diego State Aztecs 38-7 in Tempe on Sunday. Quarterback Jeff Krohn threw four touchdown passes for the Sun Devils. The Devils will meet the tough UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles on Saturday. The Bruins improved to 2-0 with an easy 41-7 win over the Kansas Jayhawks.

The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks relied upon a superb defensive effort to slip by Stephen F. Austin 10-3 in Flagstaff on Sept. 7. Another non-conference game on the road at Oklahoma State on Sept. 15 may show the true quality of this Lumberjack team. The Cowboys nipped Louisiana Tech 30-23 to even their record at 1-1 on Sept. 7.
