Pondering the Pigskin

The Arizona Cardinals fresh from a 24-20 exhibition game win over the Chicago Bears, took on the San Diego Chargers on Friday in the final pre-season game. The Cardinals had the misfortune to draw a bye on the first week of the regular season. They will meet the Washington Redskins in the nation’s capitol on Sept. 16.

The Arizona Wildcats playing their first game under John Mackovic at San Diego State on Thursday, defeated the Aztecs 23-10. The Wildcats had to overcome a 10-0 deficit before beginning their run of 23 straight points. The victory broke a five game Arizona losing streak. Arizona will host the Idaho Bengals on Saturday. Idaho opened against the Washington State Cougars.

The Arizona State Sun Devils will play their first game under Kirk Koetter on Saturday when they host those same San Diego State Aztecs. The Sun Devils edged San Diego State 10-7 last season. The Sun Devils next two games will be against a pair of tough PAC 10 Conference opponents in UCLA and Stanford on the road

The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks opened at home on Thursday with a 30-17 win over conference rival Cal State Northridge. The Lumberjacks will play a non-conference game against Stephen F. Austin will follow on Sept. 8, also at Flagstaff. Another non-conference game on the road at Oklahoma State on Sept. 15 may show the true quality of this Lumberjack team.
