Hopi Hi Boys Capture State Title In CC 3A

Phoenix, Ariz.---The Hopi High School boys cross country team raced by everybody to win the 3A state title in its first year in 3A after moving up from the smaller 2A class division. Hopi High beat not only all the schools that qualified from the North, but dethroned defending state champion Rio Rico High School from the south. Rio Rico is located about 100 miles south of Tucson.

Keeping in mind that the team with the lowest score wins in cross-country, Hopi won state with 41 points and Rio Rico was a step behind with 47. Window Rock grabbed third with 62, Winslow snagged fourth with 98 and Greyhills finished fifth with 199.

There were 16 teams in the 111runner race. Rio Rico1s Eric Chavez was the individual state champ, but Hopi packed its top five runners into the top 15 to earn the state championship. Logan Koopee led the Bruins with a fourth place finish.

The other runners on the championship team were Stet Lomayestewa, fifth; Roger Kisto, tenth, Dellen Lomayestewa, 14th; Harry Kisto, 15th; Matthew Honani 27th; and Doug Begay, 31st. The seniors on the team were Logan Koopee, Roger Kisto and Dellen Lomayestewa as the trio were ecstatic to go out with a state championship.
