Navajo Long Walk proposed as an addition to the National Trails System

NAVAJO NATION

WASHINGTON OFFICE –

Arvin Trujillo, Executive Director for the Division of Natural Resources testified before the House Subcommittee on National Parks and Public Lands on H.R. 1384.

This legislative proposal to amend the National Trails System Act to designate the Navajo Long Walk to Bosque Redondo as a national historic trail was introduced by Representative Tom Udall (D-NM) on April 3, 2001 and cosponsored by Representative Christopher Cannon (R-UT).

After being marked up by the Subcommittee, the Full House Resources Committee is expected to pass the bill to the House floor.

Mr. Trujillo presented a brief historical account to the Subcommittee members and made three recommendations.

The first, Congress should defer to the Navajo Nation in determining which route will be designated.

Second, Congress mandate that the National Park Service consult with the Navajo Nation in the interpretative material such as brochures, trail markers and scenic off-ramps.

And third, Congress adds appropriations language to the bill so that the Navajo Nation and the National Park Service is able to conduct the necessary research, consultation and maintenance of the Long Walk Trail.

The Navajo Nation Washington Office will be present at all future Congressional proceedings on this bill and will give updates as it proceeds through the 107th Congress.
