LPDDA creates colorful world for sick children

“Some of the first sketches for the project came in to the club three months ago. These continued to trickle in until the club realized they had more than enough. Now the cheerful cartoon characters brighten the hospital stays of children of all ages.

Doris Black coordinated the project. Ross Black, the Supervisor of Maintenance at the hospital, provided sandwiches for the artists. “After about four hours of climbing ladders and scooting around on the floor, the sandwiches were just the boost we needed to go back and begin again,” one member said.

For those who might wonder, decorative art includes murals, toll painting and other forms of, well, art that serves to decorate anything from jewelry boxes and rocks to walls and vehicles.

The LPDDA currently consists of 25 members. “They don’t all live in Winslow, but at least half live in the area,” Anderson said. “There are several in Happy Jack.” The group organized in October of 1991, and meet on the third Saturday of each month at the American Legion Hall.

The group is already making plans for their next project to benefit the community. “La Posada holds an annual event called the Festival of Trees,” Harris said. “The proceeds are donated to a charity. Our group plans to donate a tree this year which will feature all hand-painted ornaments picturing angels and stars.”

They are willing to accept help in this goal. “We are always looking for more members,” Harris said. Anyone interested in joining the group can contact members Doris Black, (520) 289-5357, or Lillian Harris at (520) 477-2351.
