The Winslow High School track teams opened their season at the Canyon State Academy (formerly Arizona Boys' Ranch) Cactus Classic Invitational on March 2. Valley Christian won the boys' meet, followed by St. Johns and Phoenix Christian. Payson won the girls' meet, followed by Valley Christian and Snowflake.
Winslow athletes who finished first in their events were Debra Hancock in the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.35 and Anthony Carter in the triple jump with a distance of 40' 6 1/2" and in the long jump with a leap of 21' 8". Carter was also eighth in the high jump.
Braden James placed second in both the 1600 meters and the 800 meters. The boys' 3200 meter relay team of James, Dustin Taylor, Lawrence Watson and Steve Hancock also finished second.
Jackie Foster finished third in the long jump, the triple jump and the discus. She also finished sixth in the shot put. Steve Hancock was third in the 800 meters and fourth in the 1600 meters.
Scott Dobbins finished fourth in the pole vault.
Heather Johnson was fifth in the 3200 meters. The girls' 400-meter relay team of Tessa Sadler, Jodi Wybron, Jenna Adams and Katie Koll also finished fifth.
The Winslow 1600-meter relay teams both finished sixth, as did the girls 3200 meter relay team. Track Teams victorious at 5-way meet
The Winslow High School track teams each placed first in five-team meets held in Winslow on Wednesday. Jackie Foster paced the girls' team with four first place finishes and Anthony Carter led the boys' team with two first place finishes and a tie for first.
The Winslow boys finished with 103 points to 97 for second place Snowflake and 90 for third place Blue Ridge. Holbrook had 28 points and Pinnacle finished with 13 points.
The Winslow girls nipped Snowflake with 118 points to 115 1/2 for the Lady Lobos. Blue Ridge was third with 51 points, followed by Pinnacle with 36 points and Holbrook with 21.
Jackie Foster was first in the shot put, discus, long jump and triple jump. Anthony Carter was first in the long jump and triple jump and tied for first in the 100 meters. Scott Dobbins was first in the pole vault. Katie Koll was first in the pole vault and third in the 200 meters. Steven Hancock was first in the 800 meters and second in the 1600 meters. Heather Johnson was first in the 3200 meters and second in the 1600 meters. Debra Hancock was first in the 400 meters.
Tom Taylor was second in the pole vault and fifth in the 110 meter hurdles. Braden James was second in the 800 meters and third in the 1600 meters. Amy Payne was second in the pole vault. Lawrence Watson was second in the 3200 meters.
Ron Jones was third in the 300-meter hurdles. Michelle Francis was third in the discus.
Josh Hancock was fourth in the pole vault and fifth in the 800 meters. Max Hernandez was fourth in the discus. Jenna Adams was fourth in the triple jump.
Nick Patton was fifth in the pole vault. Nicole Ervien was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. Lexine Jensen was fifth in the 800 meters.
