Manager Trainee Is First For Community First National Bank

Eric Newell

Eric Newell began working at the Winslow branch on July 9th.

Newell graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Marketing and Human Resources in December of 2000 and entered Community First Bank’s training program in Fargo, North Dakota.

Bank Manager Shirley Lomeli said that Community First Bank has been conducting this program since 1995. The program usually consists of 10 people who start their training at the bank’s headquarters in Fargo and then go to work at different branches across the country.

Community First Bank’s headquarter let branches know they have trainees available and if a branch is in need of another worker, they can bring in a trainee, she explained.

Arizona has two trainees this year, Newell in Winslow and another in Globe.

Community First Bank’s trainee program is open for any individual who is interested in managing a bank, Lomeli added.

Newell will work at the Winslow branch for a minimum of seven months. In that time he will gain experience in all aspects of managing a bank.

"I’ve got to know all the different positions, everything," he said.

Newell said the aspects of the job he enjoys most are commercial lending and investing. He recently received his "Series Seven" license, which allows him to work with stocks and bonds.

Lomeli said that having Newell on board helps with the bank’s workload and it offers him a good opportunity to work with people.

"Everyone I work with was real welcoming, they are helping me to learn a lot, I’m learning from the best," Newell said.

Lomeli said that headquarters thought Newell would get a good education about banking in the Winslow branch because it actually consists of three different branches, Winslow, Holbrook and Heber. "It will be good learning for when he gets his own bank," she added.

Newell said he is used to small community life because his hometown of Rawlings, Wyoming has a population of about 8,000 people. His parents Ed and Charlotte and his brothers Cameron and Aaron reside in Rawlings. He enjoys golf, hunting, fishing and camping during his free time.
