Arrest of Elder Navajo Women By Hopi Police At Sundance Ceremony Near Big Mountain Brings Quick Response From Lakota Medicine Man

Hopi police arrested five women Wednesday, July 11 near Big Mountain, Arizona. They were held for a time in the Keams Canyon jail and released on their on recognizance. Their arrest send shock waves through the Navajo Nation and those who felt the arrests were unjustified. A statement was received at Observer offices almost immediately following the arrest.
Following is the statement sent to the media by a Lakota Medicine Man concerning the arrests. A statement that the sacred tree used in the Sundance ceremony has been seized has not been verified.
