Important Enchantment Region games on tap in January

The Enchantment Region basketball season resumed with three important league games on Tuesday, January 9. The Winslow Lady Bulldogs took a 13-2 record into their first games of the new year when they met the surprisingly strong Window Rock Lady Scouts at Window Rock. Winslow was 3-0 in the Enchantment Region entering that game and boasted one of the premier girls’ basketball teams in the state. The Lady Bulldogs face formidable road tests at Tuba City on Friday and at Ganado on Saturday before returning home to host Greyhills on Tuesday. The Winslow boys faced the same formidable tests as the girls as they, too, returned to the hardwood.

Greyhills Academy hosted the Tuba City Lady Warriors on January 9. The Monument Valley teams hosted Pinon on that date. The Lady Mustangs, especially, face the task of overcoming a pair of losses to Winslow during December action. The Monument Valley boys won both of their games with the Bulldogs.

The key games on Friday are probably the contests between the finalists in the 2000 Arizona State Championship Tournament in which Tuba City will host Winslow. Window Rock is at Pinon in another regional contest. Greyhills is at Ganado for the final regional contests of the day. Monument Valley play non-conference games with Show Low at Kayenta.

On Saturday, Ganado will host Winslow, Pinon will host the Tuba City teams and Monument Valley will be Window Rock.

Tuesday, January 16, the Pinon teams will play at Ganado, Winslow will host Greyhills and Tuba City will host Monument Valley.

Given the makeup of the Enchantment Region, the first week of 2001 could easily be the most important of the season, especially for the teams from Winslow. The girls have defeated a contending Monument Valley team twice, but the boys have a pair of losses to the Mustangs. Tuba City is the defending state champion in both leagues. Window Rock and Ganado are also legitimate contenders. Greyhills has proven a capable opponent. Pinon will be dropping to 2A classification next season, but has shown itself competitive in the pre-season.
