A water line break on a cold morning meant working with glue at a fast pace to get the pipes replaced and repaired in the concession stand at the Winslow Rodeo Grounds by Hank Garcia and Joe Lomeli. The City Facilities Department crews do just about everything to keep the city going.

On the other side of the rodeo grounds a group was planning the pipe repairs needed for the pens before the Baca Rough Stock Rodeo arrives for its first performance, Saturday, March 3.

The Baca Rough Stock Rodeo will be in Winslow nine weeks this year. Last year the rodeo came to town with added income in our low months. The rodeo folks also came to like us a lot and we came to like them too. Winslow can look forward to a cowboy Spring season with the return of our new friends.

As Sam Sees It

Congratulations to Coach Don Petranovich and the Winslow Lady Bulldogs for advancing to the semi-final round of the Arizona State 3A Girls' Basketball Tournament in Phoenix. Hopefully, many Winslow fans will make the trek to cheer this fine team on to victory at 3:15 p.m. on Friday against the Ganado Lady Hornets and again at 2 p.m. on Saturday against the Tuba City-Monument Valley victor.

Congratulations, too, to Coach Paul Landis and the Winslow Bulldogs for a most entertaining and exciting season. The Bulldogs came up just short on Wednesday against a tall and talented Wickenburg Roughrider squad and saw their season end. They didn't go down without a fight and made all of us proud of them.

We will miss the seniors: Ronald Jones, Sherrone Lee, Braden James, Todd Hancock, Carlos Clark and Hesston Yazzie. Hesston showed us again in the tournament why he is a crowd favorite with his exciting style of play. All of these players gave the game a 100 percent effort and it is appreciated.

We may also miss Coach Landis, as his status going into this year was temporary due to possible conflicts with his responsibilities as a principal. He showed us he is a fine coach. Hopefully, those conflicts will not be insurmountable.

There is plenty of talent coming back for another exciting Bulldog season. Bryan Curtis and Seth Davis gave this team much of its scoring punch and provided leadership. Both are juniors. Manuelito Shirley, another junior, brought the same type of quickness we admired in Hesston Yazzie. He will likely be an even greater force next season. Jonathan Upshaw, Evander Lee and Shane Garnett all contributed significantly as juniors and should again as seniors. Todd Hancock was the lone sophomore on the squad, but made his presence felt. He should have two good seasons in his future.

Most of the Winslow girls will be back for at least one more season. Coach Petranovich's squad was made up of four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and a freshman. Seniors Georgiann Neboyia, Virginia Keyonnie and Kellene Jackson will be missed.

Senior Francine McCurtain will play somewhere at the next level. McCurtain is a special basketball player. She is a team player with no obvious weakness. She plays excellent defense, is always among the top scorers and manages to dish off assist after assist as well. She is probably among the team's leading rebounders.

We will miss you, Francine, but we wish you luck wherever you play your college basketball.
