The Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 51-46 to claim the Enchantment Region Championship at Tuba City on Saturday. Tuba City improved its record to 25-3. Winslow fell to 21-5 for the year. Both teams advanced to the Arizona State 3A Championship Tournament, which began in Flagstaff on Tuesday.

The Lady Warriors led 10-8 after the first period, but Winslow came back to take 22-19 half-time lead. Tuba City fought back to tie the contest at 34-34 after three periods.

Francine McCurtain, who was later named Enchantment Region Player of the Year, led all scorers with 22 points for Winslow.

Nicole Tsingine paced the Tuba City attack with 16 points. Jayme Lomakema was also in double figures for the Lady Warriors.

In earlier girls’ basketball action, the Ganado Lady Hornets defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 58-47 to claim the third seed in the state tournament.

Lady Bulldogs 64 Monument Valley 59 in triple overtime

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 64-59 in triple overtime in the first semi-final game of the Enchantment Region Tournament played on Friday in Tuba City. The win sent the Lady Bulldogs into the finals of the tournament with a record of 21-4 for the season.

The game was close from the opening tip. Monument Valley led 9-6 after the first period, but Winslow had forged an 18-18 tie by the intermission and had a 35-27 lead after three periods. The Lady Mustangs fought back to tie the contest midway through the fourth period and it was tied at 44-44 at the end of regulation. The game remained tied at 51-51 after the first overtime and 53-53 after two extra periods.

Francine McCurtain led all scorers with 22 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Lexine Jensen scored 21 for Winslow and Nicole

Begaii added 16 to finish in double digits.

Miranda Todachine led the Lady Mustang attack with 19 points. Lorena Sullivan with 16 points and Irene Bahe with 10 were also in double figures for Monument Valley.

Winslow won the game at the foul line where the Lady Bulldogs converted on 19 of 31 attempts. Monument Valley made eight of 13 charity attempts. Both teams were plagued with turnovers. The Lady Mustangs committed 30 miscues to 27 for Winslow.

Bulldogs 53 Pinon 44

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Pinon Eagles 53-44 in an Enchantment Region Tournament elimination basketball game played at Winslow on Wednesday, February 7. Winslow improved its record to 13-11 for the season and advanced to play regular season champion Tuba City in Tuba City. The Bulldogs also clinched a berth in the Arizona State 3A Tournament, which began in Flagstaff. Pinon ended its season with a 14-16 record.

Winslow moved in front in the second quarter after the first period had ended with the two teams tied at 10-10. The Bulldogs led 27-21 at the intermission and 40-32 after three periods.

Heston Yazzie came off the net to spark the Bulldogs and wound up with 11 points. Bryan Curtis led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Manuelito Shirley also scored 11 for the victors.

Randy Whitehair scored 12 for the Eagles, all on three-point baskets. Anthony Burke was also in double figures with 11 points.
