Winslow Bulldogs defeat Knights

Bulldogs 67 Knights 43

The Winslow Bulldogs completed their regular season with 67-43 victory over the Greyhills Academy Knights in an Enchantment Region basketball game played at Tuba City on Friday. The win gave the Bulldogs a 12-11 record for the regular season and a 7-5 record in the Enchantment Region. Greyhills fell to 11-16 for the season and 1-10 in the region.

Seth Davis paced the Winslow attack with 24 points. He was the only Bulldog in double figures.

Uriah Yazzie led the Knights with 19 points. LaVaniel Gishie was also in double figures for Greyhills with 12 points.

The Knights led after the first period 9-8, but Winslow had moved in front 27-22 by the intermission. The Bulldogs led 43-33 after three periods and used a big fourth quarter margin to pull away.

Lady Bulldogs 52 Knights 41

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Greyhills Academy Lady Knights 51-41 to conclude their Enchantment Region regular season slate. The Lady Bulldogs were 20-4 in the regular season and 10-2 in the Enchantment Region. They will enter the regional tournament at Tuba City on Friday as the league’s second seed. Greyhills fell to 6-25 for the season and 0-11 in the region.

Winslow led after every quarter, but was never able to establish a comfortable margin. The Lady Bulldogs were up 10-6 after the first period, 23-20 at the intermission and 32-29 after three periods. They played without their senior leader Francine McCurtain or starting point guard Lexine Jensen.

Nicole Begaii assumed the role of scoring leader for Coach Don Petranovich and poured in 23 points. Heather Johnson was also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points. The victory was the 540th of Petranovich’s storied career.

Rayetta Farrell was a force for the Lady Knights as she scored 20 points to lead the Greyhills attack.
