Basketball Action - Hopi Girls Beat Holbrook

Holbrook, Ariz, - Hopi High School used a tenacious defense to take down previously unbeaten Holbrook, 43-39, in girls basketball action Tuesday night. The Lady Bruins improved to 7-1 while the Lady Roadrunners dropped to 5-1.

This was the conference opener for both teams in the 3A North, but it was different for Hopi because it was the Lady Bruins first conference game after moving up from 2A to 3A. Hopi High Coach Rick Baker said the girls were thrilled to get the victory in their first game in the conference.

“We’re gaining confidence and we think we’ll surprise some teams that don’t expect us to be there,” he said. Hopi High won this game despite four injuries. Zondra Mahle and Marie Koopee didn’t play because of knee problems. Eudora Nodestine, backup point guard, sprained her ankle during warmups and couldn’t play. Hannah Honani strained her thigh early in the third quarter and couldn’t play after that.

“The kids who were in during the fourth quarter really kept their composure,” he said. “Our defense kept us in the game. Tara did a good job defensively, but it was a solid team effort on defense. We kept coming up with steals, but we didn’t always capitalize.” Holbrook had 15 turnovers while Hopi only had seven.
