Navajo Nation Leaders Support December 15 Mckinley County Veterans “Stand Down” Day

Window Rock, Navajo Nation – President of the Navajo Nation Kelsey A. Begaye and Vice President Taylor McKenzie, M.D., issued a Proclamation expressing support for McKinley County Veterans “Stand Down” Day on December 15, 2001.

Text of Proclamation: THE NAVAJO NATION Proclamation supporting THE DECLARATION OF DECEMBER 15, 2001 AS MCKINLEY COUNTY VETERANS “STAND DOWN” DAY.

WHEREAS, the Navajo people have always exemplified the true spirit of the Navajo Warrior. They have, without hesitation, always stepped forward to answer the Nation’s call to duty – to preserve, protect and defend freedom; and WHEREAS, a military “Stand Down” is where soldiers are removed from the field of combat for rest and recreation; and

WHEREAS, today’s version of a “Stand Down” is designed and intended to bring a wide array of pre-existing specialized resources together at one location to provide a comprehensive therapeutic program to homeless and at-risk veterans such as employment, housing, medical, legal and social services programs; and

WHEREAS many local veterans need direction or assistance in obtaining benefits from the United Stated Department of Veterans Affairs (VA benefits) and health care services; and

WHEREAS, the Gallup Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Women’s Auxiliary and the New Mexico Army National Guard have organized a “Stand Down” to call attention to the need of veterans, which is scheduled for Saturday, December 15, 2001, at the National Guard Armory, 54 Hassler Valley Road, Gallup, New Mexico.
