Tuba's Lady Warriors undefeated

TUBA CITY— With three solid pitchers, three solid hitters and good depth, Tuba city is off to a strong softball season. The Lady Warriors have won 10 of 14 overall and remain undefeated in three 3A North Conference games.

The pitchers are Melissa Hernandez, Keri Tuchawena and relief ace Brianna Hickman. Dawn “Sky” Reed, Hernandez and Tuchawena are all hitting above .400.

The infield has Gail Tunny at first base, Rachelle Bahe at second, Tuchawena at shortstop and Hernandez at third. The outfield has Katrina Attikai in left, Jessica Gallegos in center and Alicia Tallsalt in right. The catcher is Janene Martinez. The key substitutes are Melissa Gishie, Calandra Yazzie and Louvina Keams.

Tuba City Coach Steve Victor said this is one of the best high school softball teams he’s ever seen on the field.

“We hope to win the conference. Last year, we were eliminated in the second round at state, so this year we want to at least make it to the third round at state and then on to the championship,” he said.

Coach Victor noted that no Tuba City softball team has ever made it to the championship game, but that this team is so talented that it scares him.

“I appreciate having this squad,” he said. “The girls are coachable and they work hard.”

“Sports has always been there and helped me with meeting people and going places to see what they have to offer. Now I’m giving it back to the young people,” he commented.
