638 Contract <br>negotiations underway with Navajo Area IHS

WINDOW ROCK—Navajo Area Indian Health Service and the Navajo Health Care System Corporation announced that negotiations began April 9th regarding the Navajo Indian Self-Determination Contract Application for programs, functions, services, and activities currently operated and administered by the Navajo Area IHS.

These negotiations are part of an on-going process initiated by the Contract Application authorized by Navajo Nation Council Resolution CJA-10-01, of January 25, 2001, and submitted by the Corporation on February 1, 2001. Negotiation sessions are scheduled through April and ending May 6, 2001.

The Corporation plans to present a finalized Agreement based on the negotiations to the Navajo Nation Council in July 2001 for consideration.

The Navajo Negotiating Team is comprised of representatives from the Health and Social Services Committee, Corporation Board of Directors, Corporation CEO and attorney, and various Navajo Nation programs, including Divisions of Health, Justice, Finance, and Contracts and Grants.

The Navajo Area IHS Negotiating Team is comprised of personnel from Area Offices and Headquarters, Regional Counsel, and other IHS area consultants.

It is the intent of both teams to mutually agree to the best possible funding agreement that would provide additional financial resources for Navajo health care and allow local communities to truly provide the best health care service delivery for its people. It is anticipated that negotiation sessions will continue to move forward in a positive constructive manner, which characterized the first week of negotiations.
