Snowflake 18 Winslow 7

The Snowflake Lobos defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 18-7 in a non-conference football game played in Winslow on Friday. Both teams are headed for the Arizona State 3A Conference Championship Tournament with 6-3 records. Winslow (second seed from the Enchantment Region) will host Round Valley (third seed from the 3A East) on Friday. Snowflake (fourth seed from the 3A East) will journey to Ganado on Friday to take on the Enchantment Region Champion Hornets.

Snowflake got the only score of the first half on a 21-yard run by Randy Brimhall with 8:33 left in the second quarter. Jeremy Smith converted to give the Lobos a 7-0 lead. Winslow had dominated the first quarter, but been stopped on downs at the Snowflake four and 30-yard lines on their first and second possessions.

The Bulldogs started the second half with good field position at the Snowflake 40 after a Robert Padilla pass interception. The 'Dogs tried to go to the air but suffered a pair of interceptions and a quarterback sack.

The Lobos drove inside the Bulldog 10 and Smith booted a 23-yard field goal with 3:53 left in the third period.

Winslow scored early in the fourth period on a 29-yard run by David Manthei to cut the Lobo lead to 10-7 after Brandon Nazario's conversion was good.

Snowflake put the game away when Smith ran five yards with 3:58 left in the contest. Jeremy Johnson ran for a two-point conversion to put the final points on the board. The score followed a fake punt by the Bulldogs that turned the ball over at the Winslow 17-yard line.

Regional Preview

The Ganado Hornets (8-1, 6-0) had no problem with the Monument Valley Mustangs as they rolled to a 38-0 victory at Kayenta. The Hornets will host the Snowflake Lobos (6-3) on Nov. 3 in the first round of the state play-offs. Snowflake defeated Winslow 18-7 in a non-conference game at Winslow.

The Winslow Bulldogs (6-3, 5-1) were hurt by penalties and negative plays in key situations in their 18-7 loss to Snowflake. The Bulldogs will host Round Valley (7-2) in the first round of the play-offs on Nov. 3. The Elks suffered a 52-0 thrashing by top-ranked Blue Ridge at Lakeside.

The Tuba City Warriors (7-2, 4-2) edged the Window Rock Scouts (4-5, 3-3) 14-7 in Window Rock to claim the third seed from the Enchantment Region for the state play-offs. The Warriors will journey to Show Low to meet the Cougars. Show Low (6-3) suffered a 10-0 upset by the Payson Longhorns in Payson.

Window Rock faces the unenviable task of facing the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets (9-0) at their hive in Lakeside. Blue Ridge crushed Round Valley 52-0 to complete a perfect regular season schedule.

The game between Pinon and Greyhills was not reported.
