McCurtain, Monument Valley Coach, garner volleyball honors

Winslow High School senior Francine McCurtain was named to the All Enchantment Region Volleyball Team following the regional tournament in Winslow on Saturday.

Lucinda Nash of Monument Valley was named the Enchantment Region Volleyball Coach of the Year. Carrie Nash, also of Monument Valley, was selected as the Enchantment Region Volleyball Player of the Year. The Monument Valley Lady Mustangs went undefeated in league play and then won the regional tournament as well.

Monument Valley also dominated the 12 member All Enchantment Region Team placing seniors Yahnibaa Waley, Bridgette Logg, Tennell Gilmore and Fernanda Leonard on the elite squad.

Ganado was represented by senior Candice Kirkland, junior Jolene Benally and sophomore Melissa Peterson.

Tuba City placed senior Amy North and junior Sharlimar Navajo on the squad.

McCurtain was Winslow's only representative on the team.

Window Rock was represented by senior Leona Birtcher and Greyhills by senior Leann Hascon.

Making the Honorable Mention list were Roberta Hoskie and Nadine Notah of Window Rock, Kimberly Nash and Janthina Benally of Monument Valley, Heather Thomas and Taella Begay of Tuba City, Rachel Nez and Philandra Nelson of Ganado, Andrea Askie and Kristina Muzzie of Pinon and Starlet Joe and Virginia Keyonnie of Winslow.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs were eliminated from the Arizona State 3A Volleyball Championship Tournament in Phoenix when Blue Ridge defeated them two games to one. The Lady Yellowjackets won the first game 15-12. Winslow came back to take the second contest 15-11, but Blue Ridge won the final game and the match by the same 15-11 score.

Monument Valley advanced by defeating Seton Catholic two games to none, winning both games by identical 15-6 scores.

Ganado won two matches and stayed alive. The Lady Hornets defeated Round Valley 15-9 and 15-5 and followed that victory with a two-game sweep of Fountain Hills. The Lady Hornets took the first game 15-7 and the second 15-9.
