The Monument Valley Mustangs defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 79-51 in an Enchantment Region basketball game played in Winslow on Friday, December 8. The victory was the fifth straight for the undefeated Mustangs and their first in the region. Winslow dropped to 4-3 for the season and 0-1 in the region.

Monument Valley jumped all over the Bulldogs and has established a commanding 29-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. The margin was 53-24 at the intermission and 73-36 after three quarters. Winslow made the final score look more respectable with a 15-6 scoring margin in the final period.

Three Mustangs finished the night in double figures with Mitchell Emerson leading the way with 19 points. Kevin Tallman finished with 18 points. Troy Watson scored 14 for the Mustangs and contributed many assists with his pinpoint passes.

Manuelito Shirley and Bryan Curtis shared scoring honors for the Bulldogs with 10 points each.

The Bulldogs will participate in the Pepsi Invitational at Flagstaff beginning on Thursday. In a quirk of the schedule, the Bulldogs will journey to Kayenta for a rematch with the Mustangs on Friday, December 22. That will be the second and last regular season meeting between the two squads.

Coconino 67 Bulldogs 56

The Coconino Panthers defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 67-56 in a non-conference basketball game played in Flagstaff on December 12. The loss left the Bulldogs with a record of 4-4 for the season and 0-1 in the Enchantment Region.

The Bulldogs held a one-point lead of 7-6 after the first period and of 21-20 at the intermission. The Panthers used a 25-point third quarter to take a 45-35 lead into the final period.

Winslow had four players score in double figures led by Heston Yazzie with 14 points. Seth Davis, Bryan Curtis and Braden James all tallied 12 points for the Bulldogs.

Andre Somoza led the Panthers with 14 points, Corrin Johns was in double figures also with 10 points for the victors.

Lady Warriors 52 Coconino 37

The Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Coconino Lady Panthers 52-37 in the first round of the Winslow Winter Classic on Thursday, December 14.

Amy North paced the victorious Tuba City girls with 18 points. Sharlimar Navajo was also in double figures with 12 points for the Lady Warriors. Kira Thomas led Coconino with 13 points.

The game was close throughout the first half as Tuba City led 14-10 after the first period and 22-17 at the intermission. The Lady Warriors had a double-digit lead of 41-31 after three periods.

In other first round action Thursday Desert Vista defeated River Valley 57-41, Snowflake got by Flagstaff 66-60, Seton Catholic edged Holbrook 39-35, Winslow defeated Blue Ridge 43-32, Highlands spanked Greyhills 66-36, Monument Valley drubbed Chinle 77-47, Pinon defeated Alchesay 63-44, Mountain View blistered Chino Valley 73-31, Page nipped Ganado 41-38, Corona del Sol blitzed Hopi 86-33 and Window Rock nipped Bradshaw Mountain at the buzzer 59-58.

Lady Bulldogs 54 Gallup 33

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Gallup Bengals 54-33 in a non-conference basketball game between state championship contenders from Arizona and New Mexico. The victory sent Winslow into the Winslow Winter Classic with a record of 6-1 for the season and 1-0 in the Enchantment Region.

Coach Don Petranovich said after the game that the Lady Bulldogs had played as well as he has seen a Winslow team play in years. The key to the victory was holding the Lady Bengals scoreless in the second period as Winslow turned a 13-13 first period deadlock into a 25-13 Lady Bulldog lead. The victors still led 39-25 after three periods. Petranovich said that Gallup was an excellent team but his squad had been at the top of their game for the contest.

Nicole Begali paced the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points, including three three-point goals. Francine McCurtain and Lexine Jensen each finished in double digits with 12 points. Navessa Hubbard was in double figures for Gallup with 14 points.
