Greyhills Academy starts school year
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - In the last two weeks, Greyhills Academy High School has been bustling with activity to bring in the school year. On Aug. 5-6, the staff went through an orientation to get prepared for the school year. Some of the more notable events were the speeches made by the staff such as Athletic Director Toney Begay, who has been with the school since it opened almost 40 years ago. He is due to retire at the end of the year.

Multi-cultural student group visits Hopi Reservation
POLACCA, Ariz. - Up With People highlighted a visit to the Hopi Reservation with a performance Aug. 26 as they mixed cultural tunes with American songs. Performing with 85 people from 17 countries, the group brought a high energy positive message about the need for people to reach out across cultures.

Ta'ala Hooghan InfoShop: a center for Native youth
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Ta'ala Hooghan InfoShop and Youth Media Arts Center located at 1700 N. Second St. is an action-packed center for Native American youth and activists. One of the youth services provided is the Outta Your Backpack Media (OYBM) program, which allows Native youth to develop and produce their own films projects.

Hopi Day School promotes community involvement
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - The Hopi Day school has found creative ways to bring parents together each month by hosting a shin dig to allow parents to get together. The idea was developed after low attendance at parent meetings so staff and Principal Thomas came up with the idea to hold a monthly shin dig to get parents to come to the school and be more involved.

Hopi Lavayi Institute works to revitalize Hopi language
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - On July 30, the Hopi Lavayi Institute concluded its yearly program. This year's program included Hopi language classes for ages K-8 and young adults along with teacher training. Under the direction of Dr. Sheila Nicholas from the University of Arizona, children and young adults were immersed in the Hopi language during the classes for four weeks.

Kayenta Intermediate School makes AYP
KAYENTA, Ariz. - Kayenta Intermediate School (KIS) Grades 3-5 have made the "No Child Left Behind" status of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two straight years. This amazing academic achievement is due to the hard work by the staff at KIS, as well as the students and parents.

Hopi Day School 'a model school' for Hopi language
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - The Hopi Day school has always been a center of the community in Kykotsmovi. According to Principal John Thomas, it is a community school for the people. Thomas has been teaching in the BIA system for more than 20 years from White Mountain to Moencopi Day School. He has a strong feeling about community involvement and feels that Hopi Day School is a "community school open to activities."

Greyhills Academy board meets to discuss challenges
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - On July 16-17 the Greyhills School board held their summer retreat in Las Vegas, Nev. to discuss issues concerning the schools before the school year started. It has been a challenging past year for Greyhills with the reorganization of the staff and resignation of two board members.

Greyhills Academy approved for reauthorization
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - The Education Committee of the Navajo Nation Council held a regular meeting at Greyhills Academy Auditorium on June 16. One of the items on the agenda was the reauthorization of Greyhills Academy High School (GAHS).

Jonathan Nez, council delegate from Shonto, sponsored Legislation No. 0849-10 for sanctioning and reauthorizing the grant at GAHS.
