Hopi Chairman continues to serve the Hopi people
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - Hopi Tribal Chairman LeRoy Shingoitewa would like the Hopi people to know that he is busy getting the tribal government functioning as it should. One of the most urgent issues is the Snowbowl project where he will make a statement on the Hopi Tribe's position on snowmaking plans. He says he will make a statement on practitioner concerns and "by resolution of the tribe will make sure he stands up for Hopi beliefs of several people."

Navajo Parks welcomes new manager
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - With the Navajo Nation close to entering into a joint-partnership with the National Parks Service to maintain and manage Canyon de Chelly, Navajo Parks and Recreation has hired on a new park manager to take on the task of operating one of the Navajo people's most sacred sites.

Navajo election board supervisors table ballot language
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Navajo Board of Election Supervisors voted to table a resolution approving the ballot language for a referendum on the election of judges and justices and other amendments to the Navajo Nation Code concerning the Judicial Branch until there is funding for public education.

IGR Committee votes to override Shirley veto
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Intergovernmental Relations Committee (IGR) passed several resolutions last Monday, including a resolution to override Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley's veto of the proposed Western Navajo Agency Decentralization Pilot Project.

Fowler hosts appreciation cookout
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - On August 5, Coconino County District 5 Supervisor Lena Fowler hosted a BBQ in appreciation for the many volunteers that contributed to the Fourth of July festivities. Many people and their families attended to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs and music by DJ EFX.

Gallup, N.M. mayor signs race relations agreement
ST. MICHAELS, Ariz.-The mayor of Gallup, N.M. has signed a new government to government initiative to address human rights violations against Navajo citizens. Gallup Mayor Harry Mendoza signed the MOA last Thursday after the Gallup City Council unanimously approved the MOA 5-0 the previous evening.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - In a vote of 1 in favor and 5 opposed, the Government Services Committee recently denied passage of a resolution that would have clarified the authorities of the Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council and Navajo Nation President, including the president's veto authority.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Office of the Speaker and Navajo Nation Council remain cautious as recent monsoon rains have caused flooding, muddy conditions and power outages in various communities across the Navajo Nation. On Aug. 4, the Commission of Emergency Management declared a state of emergency for the Navajo Nation.

Tribal leaders holds SB 1070 forum
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sen. Albert Hale and community leaders discussed potential impacts SB 1070 will have on Arizona Indian nations at the Arizona State Capitol on July 21. Phoenix Vice Mayor Michael Nowakowski, Promise Arizona, the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission and Apache County Sheriff Joe Dedman provided information on how best to prepare before the enactment date of July 29.

Navajo Council passes crucial legislation
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Navajo Nation Council passed historic legislation last week authorizing the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation, Inc., Utah Navajo Health Systems, Inc. and Winslow Indian Health Care Center, Inc., to participate in Title V Self-Governance. The Council also passed the Judicial Elections Referendum Act of 2010 and the Tobacco Products and Licensing Act Amendments of 2010.

Hopi Council removes Felter as Council secretary
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - In a final vote of 10 in favor, 5 against, the Hopi Tribal Council on June 30 formally removed Mary A. Felter, Hopi Council secretary, from office in a public hearing that lasted just over two hours. The hearing resulted from a series of charges made against Felter alleging that she had violated certain provisions of the Hopi Tribal Constitution.

The legislation is an attempt to further initiate an eco-friendly Navajo Nation by addressing the neglect of old campaign signs, which has caused unnecessary litter and would generate revenue.

Navajo Nation, KeyBank partner on loan for new jails, judicial facilities
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Last Thursday, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., and Controller Mark Grant signed documents for a $60 million loan from KeyBank to be used to build new judicial and correctional facilities in Crownpoint, N.M. and Tuba City. The signing comes six years after discussions first began and fulfills President Shirley's vision to see needed judicial and jail facilities built on Navajoland to combat a rising crime rate.

Delegate contends line item veto is wrong
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - When a Navajo constituent goes to their respective chapter government for housing discretionary funds or public employment program opportunities, the chance will not be there. On June 24, President Joe Shirley Jr. exercised for the first time line item veto authority, which one council delegate contends takes away the opportunity for Navajo people to seek such assistance from their local chapters.

Shirley uses line item veto for first time
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. on Thursday signed Resolution CJN-25-10 into law, exercising presidential line item veto authority for the first time since it was approved more than six months ago. This saved the Navajo Nation $5,650,000 in spending, which would have tapped the Navajo Nation Department of Justice's Contingency Management Fund.
