Hotevilla store continues serving community members
HOTEVILLA, Ariz. - Michael Hunter, manager of the Hotevilla Community Store, wants the Hopi community to know that the store is continually being upgraded to meet the needs of the community. One of the upgrades made was to the gas pumps, which now offer mid grade as well as premium grade and diesel.

Hopi Tribe continues to recover from flooding
POLACCA, Ariz. - It has been just over two weeks since the Hopi Tribe formally declared a state of emergency for residents of First Mesa because of excessive flooding caused by torrential rains in residential, farming and graveyard areas in the Polacca area.

Hopi group asks for chairman's resignation
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - Jack Harding Jr. and about 40 supporters of the "Hopi Silent Majority" group marched for a second time to the Hopi tribal chambers on Aug. 9 to deliver a second letter to Hopi Chairman Leroy Shingoitewa regarding their concerns outlined in their first protest last month.

Veterinarians visit the Navajo reservation
TUBA CITY, Ariz, - Veterinarians from Raleigh, N.C. recently came to the Navajo reservation to vaccinate pets and provide treatment to livestock. The Christian Veterinary Mission, sponsored by the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been coming to the reservation for eight years. This is Dr. Paige Wages' eighth trip to the reservation.

Graffiti removal begins on Western Navajo and Hopi
TUBA CITY and MOENKOPI, Ariz. - The Western Navajo-Hopi Meth Task Force recently launched its summer program to attack graffiti in Navajo and Hopi communities throughout the western district. On July 9, the Task Force, which included a number of local families and members of the Tuba City Boys and Girls Club, hit numerous graffiti locations in Tuba City and did the same thing in Moenkopi Village on July 10.

Hopi Rangers host fishing derby
PASTURE CANYON, Ariz. - On July 25, the Hopi Rangers under the direction of Roderick Holmes held their Seventh Annual Fishing Derby for Navajo and Hopi youth. Over 80 kids participated however not all them stayed until the end.

Hopi Chairman's job is to bring stability
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - The Hopi Tribal Chairman responded to a recent "Silent Majority" protest and wanted to make clear that he respects every Hopi's right to speak his opinion and that he is more than happy to sit down with Jack Harding and discuss issues. He stated that he and Vice-Chairman Honanie were elected by the people to "bring stability to the Hopi Tribal government and they have been very busy continually making headway."

Hotevilla youth center keeps kids busy
HOTEVILLA, Ariz. - During the summer, Hotevilla children keep busy through the efforts of Pam Ovah and her staff at the Hotevilla Youth Center. During the summer months kids attend telescope making activities to look at the stars. On a recent night they had a pajama party complete with a marshmallow roast, scary movies, and pizza.

Bike riders cross the rez for charity
CAMERON, Ariz. - Over the past couple of months there have been a couple of charity organizations crossing the reservation on bikes to bring aid to the needy. The first group to come through was the Race Across America group. Starting in Oceanside, Calif., their destination was Annapolis, Md. The race started June 7 and ended June 21, which gave them approximately two weeks to travel across the country.

Hopi programs hold two community health events
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - In the past two weeks, there have been two events promoting health for youth and men. On July 8 the Hopi Head Start program hosted a mass screening for incoming head start students. The target age was from 0-5 and was part of the recruitment efforts for Head Start and the Babyface programs.

Hopi Radio KUYI to celebrate 10th anniversary
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - The Hopi Foundation Board of Trustees and staff are honored to announce KUYI 88.1 FM, Hopi Radio, will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a live music festival on Oct. 10 at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center. The festival will include your favorite music genres as featured on KUYI such as traditional and contemporary Native American, country, blues and reggae music.

Hopi Council visted by new 'Hopi Silent Majority' group
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - Last Tuesday morning, Hopi tribal member Jack Harding of Kykotsmovi marched with his newly formed community group called "Hopi Senom-The Silent Majority" to deliver a letter to the Hopi Tribal Council.

The letter expressed a number of community concerns and dissatisfaction with decisions being made.

Navajo Housing Authority announces logo contest winner
TONALEA, Ariz. - Navajo Housing Authority (NHA) recently unveiled its new logo created by Ryan Wilson, 27, a Tonalea resident and recent graduate of Northern Arizona University. Wilson, who obtained his degree in graphic design, was awarded a $250 check for his efforts on June 28. "It is an honor to have my design selected as NHA's new logo," Wilson said.

Navajo Arts and Crafts holds Fourth of July sale
KAYENTA, Ariz. - Over the July Fourth weekend the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise (NACE) held a tent sale. On sale was western clothing - everything from boots to shirts.

NACE is a non-profit business wholly owned by the Navajo Nation established to help artists sell their merchandise and try to stem the influx of counterfeit products.

Tuba City Judicial Court hosts information sessions
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - On June 18 and 25 the Tuba City Judicial Court held two separate public information sessions. The sessions informed the public on probate issues, transfer of grazing permits, quiet title and transfer of homesite leases in the event of leaseholder death, among others.

Staff attorney Tina Hatathlie hosted the events along with Judge Allen Sloan and a representative from the BIA land office.

Healthy food systems for Navajo Nation addressed
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - More than 50 local food activists attended a two-day seminar June 15-16 at the Senior Citizens Center. Speakers from as far away as Taos, N.M. and Telluride, Colo. addressed members of the newly formed Western Navajo Food Policy Council, which was formed in conjunction with Diné Inc. and Navajo Nation Traditional Agricultural Outreach.

'Spirit of Nizhoni' reaches out to teens
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - On June 23, the Spirit of the Sun Nizhoni Project Youth Committee held a summer BBQ event for youth. Jan Norquest of the University of Arizona Flagstaff Cooperative Extension invited teens to get together through her organization. The BBQ was held at the Greyhills Academy campus and participants were treated to hamburgers, hotdogs, soda and root beer floats.

Recruitment continues for Hopi Leadership Program
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - Sept. 13 will mark the beginning of the third year of the Hopi Leadership Program (HLP). Sponsored by the Hopi Foundation, the leadership program was established in 2006 in response to a need for strong, effective and culturally grounded professionals and leaders at Hopi. To date, a total of 27 Hopi and Tewa individuals have completed the program, creating a network of professionals at Hopi.
