| Suvoyuki Day, Hopi culture events begin Saturday |
WINSLOW and SECOND MESA, Ariz. - Suvoyuki Day has been set to start on Saturday. The event will be a celebration of Hopi culture and the archaeology of Homolovi State Park even though the park, like many Arizona state parks has been closed because of the lack of funding. | No drinking water for Snowbowl |
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - In a vote of 5-2, the Flagstaff City Council voted against selling drinking water to Arizona Snowbowl ski resort for snowmaking. Today's decision is likely to delay current snowmaking efforts at Snowbowl until federal courts can rule on whether reclaimed water is safe for such use. Mayor Sara Presler and council member Karla Brewster each supported the sale of drinking water to Snowbowl, while council members Art Babbott, Scott Overton, Al White, Celia Barotz and Coral Evans opposed the sale. | Bird tests positive for West Nile virus |
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Coconino County Health Department Officials announced Sept. 1 that a bird found in west Flagstaff near Ft. Valley Road tested positive for West Nile virus. | Flagstaff council to vote on Snowbowl water issue |
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Following contentious debate late Monday night, the Flagstaff City Council delayed a vote on whether the city of Flagstaff should sell potable water to the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort for artificial snowmaking. Another meeting to further discuss the issue is scheduled for today at Flagstaff City Hall. Snowmaking proponents argued that using potable water would create jobs and boost the local economy while opponents reiterated their longtime objections to the use of any water source for snowmaking on the mountain, which is deemed sacred by many Native American tribes. | Propane truck rolls over near Moenkopi |
LOWER MOENKOPI, Ariz. - At approximately 1 a.m. on Aug. 25, a semi truck carrying propane was heading west when it rolled over while approaching the bridge across Moenkopi Wash. According to a Department of Public Safety investigator, the Tuba City emergency crews were able to extract the male driver from the wreckage. He was taken to the Tuba City Hospital for treatment. | Primaries yield few surprises in Coconino, Navajo counties |
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Despite a lower than anticipated voter turnout, voters across Arizona went to the polls on Tuesday to vote for their respective candidates. According to unofficial results, just over 24 percent (16,216) of registered voters in Coconino County showed up at the polls, well under the estimated 35-40 percent predicted by Coconino County Recorder Candace Owens. In Navajo County, there were 15,423 voters (about 26.4 percent) who showed up at the polls. Statewide, there was an estimated 25.5 percent voter turnout. Thursday, August 26, 2010

| Acclaimed Navajo artist donates mural to Williams |
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Much like a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, one wall at the east end of downtown Williams was transformed from plain brick to the host of a vibrant multi-colored mural. The mural, started July 3, is the work of Flagstaff-based Navajo artist Shonto Begay in collaboration with Cy Wagoner. PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Arizona Game and Fish Commission finalized the purchase of the 160-acre Foster Ranch property in Coconino County for the future site of the Northern Arizona Shooting Range (NASR). | Plans for two new Navajo casinos go forward |
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., Controller Mark Grant and Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise (NNGE) CEO Robert Winter signed documents last Thursday for a $5.3 million loan to build two new casinos in Tse Daa K'aan (Hogback), N.M. and Chinle, Ariz. About $3.3 million will go toward the development of the Tse' Daa K'aan casino, which is expected to open in October. The remaining $2 million will fund the Chinle casino, which is expected to open by year's end. The loan is considered to be the first of five for projected casino developments. Other sites for casinos include Upper Fruitland, N.M., Twin Arrows, Ariz., and Pinto Road along Interstate 40 between Sanders and Holbrook. Tuesday, August 24, 2010

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - During the Flagstaff City Council's special meeting on Monday, Aug. 30, the Navajo Nation will once again stand in opposition to expansion efforts of the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort. A proposal currently sits before the City Council that, if passed, would allow Flagstaff to sell potable water to the ski resort for snowmaking. "By asking the Navajo Nation if we prefer potable or effluent water is essentially asking us if we are willing to negotiate our identity as Navajos.
